One of the most important centers mentioned in the sacred texts is the Kanakadurga Temple. Built atop a hill, the temple is Meaning with Vijayawada, while Kanakadurga, the Goddess of power, riches and benevolence, is considered to be the presiding deity of Vijayawada. Adi Sankara is believed to have visited the temple and installed the 'Sri Chakra' here. During the Dassera festival, special celebrations are held.
Prakasam Barrage is an bridge which was Completed in 1957, the Prakasam Barrage is an impressive 1223.5m long, modern regulator and road bridge that stretches across the river Krishna. Its panoramic lake and the three canals that run through the city give Vijayawada a Venetian appearance.
The hill near the railway station previously called Orr Hill was renaed Gandhi Hill. A Gandhi Stupa, the first to be constructed in India was unveiled here on 6th October 1968 in meory of Gandhiji. The grand meorial coloumn was desgined by the late Sri Nandalal Bose is 52 feet high.
Mogalrajapuram cave temples is situated just 5kms from Vijayawada, that date back to the 5th century. There are totally five caves in that only one is still in good shape. The idols of Lord Nataraja and Vinayaka among others. The Ardhanareeswara Murthy found here is considered to be the only one of its kind in South India. Other popular caves are the Undavalli Caves, in the village of Undavalli, about 4 kms from Vijayawada, atop the high hills that overlook the Krishna river. It hosts fine specimens of cut-in architectural and sculptural models. A huge monolith of Lord Vishnu in lying position is a magnificent sight at these caves.
Kuchipudi, which Is situated at 60 km from Vijayawada, is the birthplace of Siddhendra Yogi, originator of the famous Kuchipudi dance. Easily accessible from Vijayawada and Guntur.
Kondapalli village, 16 km from Vijayawada, is the production centre for the faous Kondapalli toys, made with a light wood called 'Poniki'. The toys consist of idols of Gods and Goddesses, birds, animals and houses etc.
The virgin Bhavani Island situated upstrea of River Krishna close to Prakasam Barrage is a good picnic spot for holiday-lovers.
