Hiuen Tsang Memorial Hall
This hall is believed to have been erected in memory of the famous Chinese scholar who reportedly stayed here for 12 years as part of his tour of India in the 7th century AD. Whatever the purpose of this hall was, it is a reminder of the grandeur of the Nalanda University.
The Nalanda Archaeological Museum
The Nalanda Archaeological Museum is another site that ranks high amongst the Nalanda Tourist Attractions. This museum contains a remarkable collection of Buddhist and Hindu artifacts besides some Lord Buddha's statues. Two massive terra-cotta jars inside a shaded enclosure, situated behind the museum belong to the 1st century.
University was a Buddhist center of learning, it imparts thorough education to its students on various subjects. Brahmanical subjects, philosophy, grammar, sanskrit, theology, astrology, medicine, mathematics and tantric studies were the main subjects of the curriculum. It is just like the modern residential school pattern where the institution took care of the needs of the students and excavations in Nalanda reveals that the students shared a common mess.
Surya Mandir houses numerous statues of Hindu gods and goddesses. Located adjacent to ruins of the University of Nalanda, the temple has Buddhas statues other than the statues Hindu deities. The temple is primarily dedicated to Sun God which reminds us of Greek god Apollo.
This is one of the most noticeable structures among the ruins. Sariputta was one of the most prominent disciples of Buddha and became a celebrated Arhat, believed to have attained salvation.
A modern center of Buddhist thought set up by the Bihar Government; in the year 1951 Nava Nalanda Vihar tries to spread the ancient tradition to the modern generation. The institute is located at the famous lotus pond in Bihar. The centre mainly dealt with research-oriented education in the Pali script and Buddha religion.
