One of the most famous temple in Madurai is Sree Meenakshi Temple, it is dedicated to Lord Shiva, wife of parvathi or Meenakshi. This temple was built by Kulasekara Pandya and the most impressive feature of this temple is the 12 gopurams. It also has soaring towers that stand on the granite bases and have stucco figures of deities, mythical animals and monsters tinted in vibrant colors. The structure of this gopuram is as high as a nine-storeyed building. The entire structure is decorated with many carved images of gods and goddesses associated with the Hindu religion. This temple is considered a very sacred site by the Hindu devotees. The temple is unique as it has dual shrines meant to pay homage to a god and a goddess closely associated with the Hindu religion.
One of the beautiful place in Madurai is Thirumalai Nayak Palace. The palace had two parts known as Swargavilasa and Rangavilasa. This palace was built by King Thirumalai Nayak with valuable assistance of an Italian architect in the year 1636. The palace shrine is situated towards the northeast of the palace structure. Here, Thirumalai Nayak used to offer prayers to the deity called Rajrajeswari. The shrine exhibits fine carvings on stone. The dome is enfolded with gold.
Thirupparankundram, which is one of the six abodes of Lord Muruga, stands 10km south from Madurai . It serves as the best among the Arupadai Veedu of Lord Muruga, attracting rolling crowds all the year. Thirupparankundram, the place where Lord Muruga was married with Devayanai, is considered as a sacred place for marriages.
This rock cut temple has separate shrines for Lord Ganapathy, Shiva, Durgai, Vishnu and other deities. The entrance of the temple is built with 48 Nayaka period pillars with artistic carvings engraved on them. The speciality of Thirupparankundram temple is that the innermost shrine is carved from a single rock.
Gandhi Museum is the the most distinguished among the tourist attractions in Madurai and is a living memorial of Mahatma Gandhi. This museum houses photos, paintings, sculptures, manuscripts, quotations, and some articles that were used by him.
