The Maya Devi Temple is dedicated to Maya Devi, the mother of Lord Buddha. This temple was built in the 19th century and sacred shrine of both the Buddhists and Hindus. This temple has a stone bas-relief of the Buddha's birth scene and is believed to have been built over an earlier 5th century temple which has replaced the Asoka temple.
The place of Mahaparinirvana, it was at Bodhgaya that Gautama Buddha attained unsurpassed, supreme Enlightenment. The legend narrates that Siddhartha Gautama reached the village of senai and sat on a kusa grass mat under a pipal tree. Here he resolved not to rise again until enlightenment was attained. Thereafter the place became a pilgrimage site.
The Maha Bodhi temple is known for its 1700 years old idol. The idol sits facing the place where Lord Buddha achieved enlightenment.
The Bodhi tree is situated near Maha Bodhi Temple is the Bodhi tree, an ancient peepal tree. Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment under this tree.
